#PlasticBagFreeDay

PLASTIC BAG

International Plastic Bag Free Day, is a global initiative that aims to eliminate the use of plastic bags. Plastic bags may seem like a grocery shopping convenience, but they are also a huge strain on the environment. It can take up to 500 years for plastic bags to disintegrate, so they make up a large portion of what stays in our landfills and pollutes our entire planet.

Plastic comes in different shapes, colours and objects. It is almost impossible to imagine our society without it. The history of plastic takes us to 1933, where the first forms of single-use plastic (polyethylene) were created. Soon after, the popular item ‘the plastic bag’ appeared on the market.

5 PLASTIC FACTS

  1. The largest market for plastics today is packaging materials. That rubbish now accounts for nearly half of all plastic waste generated globally—most of it never gets recycled or incinerated.
  2. As of 2015, more than 6.3 billion tonnes of plastic waste had been generated. Around 9 percent of that was recycled, 12 percent was incinerated, and 79 percent accumulated in landfills or environment.
  3. World plastic production has increased exponentially from 2.1 million tonnes in 1950 to 147 million in 1993 to 406 million by 2015.
  4. More than 5 trillion pieces of plastic are already floating in our oceans.
  5. On average, plastic bags are used for 25 minutes.

HOW CAN I HELP?

Stop using plastic bags! 😉 If we want to save the planet, the time has come for each of us to take action. You can start by taking small steps, which everyone can apply.

Let’s start with the first step: avoid using single-use plastic items like straws, cups… They make our lives easier, but seriously harm the planet. These types of products have fantastic alternatives you must try!

The second item to ban out your life is the single-use plastic bag. If you go grocery shopping, remember to take your reusable bags. Fortunately,  supermarkets are already setting a good example by not offering plastic bags anymore. That’s a +1!

For the last tip we go a little further. Try to avoid using cosmetics that contains micro-plastics, instead choose for a natural, eco-friendly alternative. From lipsticks free of micro-plastic or brushes made of wood to sneakers made of natural & recycled fabrics.

WE PURSUE A NO-WASTE PLANET FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

A ZERO-WASTE BUSINESS

At Komrads we want to go that extra mile. We strive to grow as an impact company. The current system for producing, distributing, and using clothing & shoes operates in an almost completely linear way. The linear system of production needs to be changed into a circular system in which the recycling potential can be maximised. We aim to use the resources we have – our innovative drive to create full circle materials, our voice and our community – to create a no-waste planet. We do this by creating next generation footwear for our next generation.

We strongly believe that the only viable future is a circular future. Therefore our products are made to last and built to recycle.
